I have a 2003 Mk4 VW Golf 1.6 16v with about 148000 on the clock. I have posted before detailing my rough idle problem but this was sorted by having the throttle body cleaned and reset. It was fine for around 250 miles and now seems to be back but strangely goes away with the AC on .
My 1.6s mk4 golf 1999 t reg (67k)ran sweet as a nut for two years (bought @ 40k)until 4 weeks after my vw dealership service 11 months ago (maybe a coincidence!!).1st was scarey moment in a carpark invloving throttle "ghostly" goin up to 6k revs then down and very next day total power cut off soon after cold start, nothing else like this
Hi I have a Golf MK4 1.6. It has the same problem. The EPC light comes on then the revs fluctuate between 900-1100. The engine goes off in the middle of the highway! Or in traffic while driving slowly. Yesterday I started the engine but when I stepped on the gas pedal, no response.
Nah, its a 1.6 16V MKIV, don't think FSi cam ein those cars. And I'm preety sure that the 1.6 16V engine in the MKIV is not deisgned to run on specifcally 98 RON fuel, unlike S3 / R32 would be. 95ROZ is 98RON, IMO. Therefore, if its designed to run on 98ROZ that must be like 101RON or soemthing which is daft.
I found a "VW Golf MK4 1.4 1.6 16V 8v 1998-2005 EGR Valve Connecting Pipe Air Circulation" on ebay for £13 inc. 2010 Golf GTD (170) CBBB, 5 Door, Shadow Blue (P6

OOO I didn't notice to topic I posted the same sort of problem for my 1.6 too! I'll have a look at the fuses ontop of the battery tommorow as I know my luck it will play at a very inconvinient time for me lol. Never had a problem starting the 1.6 always fires first time every time till today, just makes the usual noise but doesn't fire into life.
Hi there, I'm no professional by any means but one part of the problem seems to be a wiring fault with the power steering. Could be causing power loss which drags your RPM down, causing it to stall out. Just a thought Hope it helps!
