The black screen could be caused by the app not loading properly, and each time you switch cameras, it forces the app to load again, so this could help.
In case anyone at OnePlus ( @Jimmy Z.) is interested I have a lot of example photos taken back to back with the OnePlus camera and Google camera port exhibiting the focus, shadow detail and color issues. If anything the Gcam samples prove that the HW in the OnePlus 7 pro is very capable - just the OnePlus camera needs a bit more finesse.

The Timer function is not working in the front camera. While front camera is open, the left most icon (smiley face) brings an option to set up a 2 second and 5 second timer for taking a photo. But while the timer is set, tapping on the shutter button instantly snaps the photo, without the timer countdown.
